After entering Japan, they will grant all foreigners residency rights. There are over twenty states of residence, including “temporary visitors” for tourists. Various states for Japanese students and workers, and family members of Japanese citizens and residents.

Passengers and business travelers (temporary travelers)

You are a citizen of one of over 50 countries that have signed the “General Visa Exemption Agreement” with Japan. You just require a legitimate passport to come to Japan as a “temporary visitor”. Otherwise, you must get a visa before entering the country. Temporary visitors from most countries/regions can stay for up to 90 days.

You are a citizen of the United Kingdom, Austria, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Germany, Mexico, or Switzerland. You can stick around for up to 6 months. Still need a 90-day permit to enter Japan. But then you can apply for an extension at the Japanese Immigration Bureau.

Temporary visitors cannot take part in paid activities. However, you can study in a Japanese school for a short time.

All foreign tourists visiting Japan must always carry their passports.

The rich stay longer
If you are a citizen of one of over 50 countries that have a “General Visa Waiver Agreement” in Japan. Have savings of over 30 million yen. You and your spouse are eligible to live in Japan for sightseeing or leisure in one country at most years. You cannot take part in paid activities. They must get a visa before going to Japan.
